General Luna transfers & trips

Where it is, and what the name covers
General Luna is a municipality on the south-east side of Siargao Island, in the province of Surigao del Norte. Locals and returning visitors usually just call it “GL”; the town was formerly named Cabuntog. It is where most of the island’s accommodation, restaurants and surf schools are concentrated, which is why the majority of arrivals head straight here from the airport. It is a working municipality rather than a resort strip — 25,208 people at the 2024 census, up from 22,853 in 2020 and 15,014 in 2010 — though it is still not the island’s largest town: neighbouring Dapa counted 31,392. The postal code for the whole municipality is 8419.
“General Luna” is a municipality, not an address
The municipality is subdivided into 19 barangays. Five of them — Poblacion I to V — make up the town proper; the rest spread out along the coast and inland, and Cloud 9, which many visitors think of as somewhere separate, is in barangay Catangnan and still inside General Luna. So “General Luna” on its own tells a driver very little about where you are actually going, in the same way that “Del Carmen” does not distinguish the airport from the town or the port. Give us the barangay and the accommodation name in your request and the pickup is settled before anyone is standing at a roadside.
Four of its barangays are not on Siargao at all
Of the 19 barangays, 15 are on Siargao Island and four are on outer islands — the municipal article names Anajawan, Daku and La Januza among the islands under General Luna’s jurisdiction. Daku is the inhabited one, and it is the lunch stop on the Naked, Daku and Guyam day trip. This matters for a quote rather than for trivia: an address in one of those barangays finishes with a boat, not a van, so what we can price is the road leg to the departure dock in General Luna and the run back. There is no ferry port at General Luna
This is the question we see asked most often about the town, and the answer is no. Siargao’s seaport is Dapa, on the other side of the island, and the passenger crossings from Surigao City land there — not here. What General Luna has is the island-hopping dock beside the tourism office, which is where boat trips leave from, not where you arrive on the island. On the same OpenStreetMap nodes our routes map is drawn from, Dapa Port and the General Luna town centre sit about 12 km apart in a straight line. That is map separation, not a road distance, and we still do not publish a journey time for the drive — road conditions and your actual drop-off decide that.
Getting there
Almost everyone arrives one of two ways: by air into Sayak Airport (IAO) in Del Carmen, or by sea into Dapa on a ferry from Surigao City. Both are on the far side of the island from General Luna, so a road transfer is part of the journey either way. The coast road north is newer than the guidebooks
The road up the coast from the town towards Catangnan and Cloud 9 runs over a three-bridge system that the Department of Public Works and Highways only inaugurated in November 2021: the 348.8-metre Catangnan–Cabitoonan Bridge together with Libertad Bridge 1 and Libertad Bridge 2, linking General Luna with its Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Libertad, Cabitoonan and Catangnan barangays. It is worth knowing because a good deal of the advice still circulating about getting around this coast predates it. It does not make us willing to promise a duration — we quote the journey, not a time — but it is the reason a driver can now take the coast rather than double back through the town.
Getting around once you are here
General Luna is a natural base for the rest of the island — Cloud 9 is on its doorstep, and the boat trips, rock pools and inland roads all radiate out from here. One timing note worth planning around: the Siargao International Surfing Cup has been held here annually since 1996 and has been part of the World Surf League Qualifying Series since 2014, and competition weeks are the busiest the island gets. We do not publish its dates because they are announced each year rather than fixed — check the organisers — but if your stay overlaps one, ask for the transfer early.
