Magpupungko Rock Pools transfers
Natural tidal rock pools on the east coast at Pilar, only fully visible when the tide is out — and the tide runs on its own timetable, not the clock.
Where it is, and the two things that share the name
Magpupungko is on the east coast of Siargao Island, in the municipality of Pilar, Surigao del Norte, reached off the Osmeña-Pilar Road. It is Pilar’s best-known attraction by some distance. Two separate things carry the name and it is worth knowing which one you are picturing: Magpupungko Beach is a beach, and it is there whatever the sea is doing; the Magpupungko Tidal Lagoons are the pools cut into the limestone shelf just along from it, and they are there only when the tide has gone out far enough. On the map they are two distinct features a few hundred metres apart. Pilar’s postal code, if you are addressing anything, is 8420 — General Luna’s is 8419, and the two get mixed up.
The name is a description of a rock
“Magpupungko” means “the one who sits”, from the Surigaonon root pungkò, to sit in a squatting position. It is named for the large balancing rock perched on the shelf — one boulder sitting on top of another — which is the formation in most of the photographs, alongside the rest of the weathered limestone along this stretch of shore. Knowing that is worth a little more than trivia: it is how you tell a picture of Magpupungko from any other rock pool on the island.
It only works at low tide
The pools are tidal. At high water the rock shelf sits under open sea and there is nothing to swim in but the sea itself; the calm, clear pools only appear once the water has receded far enough to leave them standing. That makes Magpupungko one of the very few trips on this island where the tide, not the clock, decides your start time — a transfer that leaves at a convenient hour can arrive to no pools at all.
Why the right time is different on your date
This is the part most advice about Magpupungko quietly gets wrong. Low water does not come at the same time each day: the tidal day runs about fifty minutes longer than the clock day, so the low-tide window slides roughly fifty minutes later every day. A time a friend gave you last week, or a blog post written last season, is simply the wrong time for your date — by a week it is out by hours. Predictions for Philippine waters are published by NAMRIA, the government mapping authority, in its annual Tides and Current Tables covering some 320 locations nationwide, and free in its PH TIDES app. We do not print a tide time on this page for the same reason we do not print journey times: your date decides it, not us. And some dates are much better than others
It is not only the hour that moves — the size of the tide moves too. Around the new moon and the full moon the range between high and low water is at its greatest, so the low is at its lowest and the shelf is at its most exposed; around the first and last quarter the range is at its smallest and a “low” tide may not uncover very much at all. That is ordinary tidal behaviour everywhere, not a local quirk, but it is the difference between the pools you saw in the photograph and a shallow disappointment. How far it actually is
On the same OpenStreetMap nodes our routes map is drawn from, the pools sit about 11 km from General Luna town centre in a straight line, about 8.5 km from Cloud 9, about 12 km from Sayak Airport, and about 2.5 km from the Pilar town proper. Those are map separations, not road distances, and we still publish no journey time — road conditions and your actual pickup point decide that. What the numbers are good for is scale: this is a proper cross-island run to the far coast and back, not a hop up the beach, which is why it is quoted as a day trip with waiting time rather than as a short transfer.
Getting there, and what the quote covers
Pilar is on the eastern side of the island and General Luna, where most visitors stay, is on the south-east, so this is a road transfer up the coast — there is no boat leg and no change of vehicle. We quote it as a there-and-back trip with the driver waiting while you are at the pools, or combined with other stops along the way if you would rather make a day of it. Tell us roughly how long you want there so the waiting time is written into the price rather than settled at the roadside afterwards. One thing that is not in our quote: the municipality collects an entrance fee at the gate, in cash, with a small charge for parking. We do not print the amount because the reported figures have changed over the years and it is the LGU’s to set, not ours — just bring cash for it on top of the transfer.
