The Siargao land tour — Maasin River, Coconut Road & Tayangban Cave Pool
The island’s inland day out — the emerald river at Maasin, the coconut viewpoints on the road above it, and the cave pool at Tayangban. All of it sits in one municipality, on one road.
Every stop is in Pilar — including the ones the internet files elsewhere
Maasin River, the Coconut Road and Coconut Viewpoint pull-offs, and Tayangban Cave Pool are all inside the municipality of Pilar. We checked each one by dropping its OpenStreetMap coordinate against the 2023 PSGC municipal boundaries committed in this repo, and all four land in Pilar — as does Magpupungko, further up the same coast. That is worth stating because the published record disagrees with itself: TripAdvisor lists the Coconut Trees View Deck under Dapa, and a good number of guides place it “between General Luna and Del Carmen”. Neither matches the boundaries. It changes nothing about the drive, but it does mean the whole day is one municipality rather than the three-town tour it is sometimes sold as.
It is the Magpupungko road, not a separate journey
This matters more than the municipality does. When we routed the General Luna to Magpupungko corridor over the real OpenStreetMap highway graph for our island map, that single road passed within a few hundred metres of every one of these stops. Coming up from General Luna you reach Coconut Viewpoint first, then Coconut Road, then Maasin, then Tayangban, and Magpupungko is further on. So the “land tour” is not a different trip from the Magpupungko run — it is the same road with the vehicle stopping. If you were already planning to go north for the rock pools, you are not buying a second journey, and you should not be quoted for one.
The bent palm tree is gone, and a lot of pages still sell it
The single most photographed thing on this route — the leaning coconut palm over Maasin River with a rope swing on it — collapsed. Pilar’s municipal tourism office announced it on 22 February 2023, and the national press picked it up two days later. Accounts differ on why (some cite natural decay, others damage from Typhoon Odette), so we will not state a cause we cannot check. What we can tell you is that visitor reports since then consistently describe a built jumping platform standing in its place, and that guide pages published as recently as January 2026 still describe swinging from the tree as though it were there. We mention it because arriving at Maasin expecting that photograph is the most common disappointment on this trip, and it is entirely avoidable.
What the three stops actually are
Maasin River is a green inland river reached from Maasin Bridge, in the village of the same name; the mapped bridge record carries “Maasin; Pilar” as its location, which is the cleanest confirmation of where you are. The coconut stops are two separately named roadside viewpoints — “Coconut Road” and “Coconut Viewpoint” sit at different points on the same stretch, which is why pins passed around online do not agree with each other; both are recorded as viewpoints rather than built structures, so expect a place to pull over and look out across the palms, not a deck. Tayangban Cave Pool is mapped as a visitor attraction just off the circumferential road, north of Maasin. We have deliberately published no timings, depths or fees for any of them: the sources we found contradict each other, and getting that wrong is worse than staying quiet.
What we quote, and what is collected on the day
We quote the vehicle, the driver and the waiting time — pickup from your accommodation in General Luna, Cloud 9, Pilar, the north end or straight from Sayak Airport or Dapa Port, the stops you want in the order that works, and the run home. Entrance and environmental fees at each site are collected locally by the barangay or the municipality, and any guide or in-cave assistance is arranged on site. Those are not ours, we do not take a cut of them, and we will not fold them into our price and present them as a package. Your written quote will say plainly which legs and which waiting time it covers so nothing has to be renegotiated at a roadside.
